Money Mongers...

Good evening.

I am shocked and I am quite disappointed to say the least.

I have just recently read an entirely disturbing article about a woman whose family is in, or was, in a battle over money. Many people are these days it would seem. But, I digress.
This woman a little over eight years ago was in a terrible car accident. She suffered severe brain damage, she has no short term memory, and was also confined to a wheelchair. Because of this, her family is unable to take care of her, and was forced to put her in a long term care facility. (i.e. a nursing home) This damage, she will never recover from.
Luckily, the family sued the trucking company for the damages ensued from the wreck. They won that battle and gained a little over $1 million. They then paid their legal fees and had a substantial amount of money left over to take care of the woman, whose name is Debbie Shank. Awesome right?
It gets better. Trust me.

The woman was also, before her tragic accident, working for Wally World. (i.e. Wal-mart) She had cleverly signed up for their health and benefit plan. So, after the accident the family was able to claim money for the medical bills that Debbie incurred. Wal-mart paid out $470,000.
Yay!
Wal-mart corporates could not let it be. A little while later, the Shanks were then sued for the same amount. But the courts would only allow Wally World to recoup (take back) the money that the Shanks had in their trust. Which was $417,000.

It was conveniently stated in fine print in the health benefits plan that should an employee collect damages, all medical expenses paid in can be taken back.

The Shanks then went into a legal battle with Wal-mart. They lost many times. Debbie's husband just could not understand why they just wouldn't allow them to have the money so that he could take care of his wife. Me neither...

Wal-mart's spokesperson stated that although Debbie's circumstances were extraordinary, Wal-mart could not allow her to get by with keeping the money, he can't allow this out of fairness to all employees.

Ha! Such bull crap.

The Shanks continued this battle a while longer, just to lose every time. The supreme court even refused to hear the case. Now, Debbie's husband is working two jobs to try and pay for his wife's care. He even was forced to divorce her so that she could earn more from Medicaid.

Okay, now for my thoughts on this.
What Wal-mart employee would really mind, that this woman Debbie Shank, was awarded the $470,000 for her medical bills? Seriously, this woman can never work again. She has no idea what is going on. Were this some sort of insurance fraud, maybe Wal-mart's actions would somewhat valid. I do not believe that Wally World was even the least bit concerned about "fairness" to all Wal-mart employees. Like I said, no one would seriously mind had they heard this woman's story.

Wal-mart pulls in about $90 billion every year. What are they missing $470,000 for? This is a minute amount of money as far as they're concerned. They are so concerned about having this money back that they take no notice to the fact that the only part of it that they can reclaim is all of the money that is in Debbie's trust. Which is for her health care. They cleaned her out without even a thought.

Her husband had to divorce her. He has to work two jobs, and is still barely making ends meet. It is disgusting that big corporate money mongers can just sit back and watch people struggle for a small amount of money that they can make with the snap of their fingers. I suppose the status is important to them.

Maybe they think that if they had let Debbie have the money, that the whole nation of Wal-mart employees would go out the next day and get hit by a car and suffer severe injuries just for the money. And maybe they would...

Welcome to America.
